Stoltenberg’s office allowed Kyiv to give up part of the territories for NATO membership

Ukraine may give up part of the territories in favor of Russia in exchange for NATO membership, said Stian Jenssen, head of the alliance’s secretary general’s office. About it writes VG.

“I think one solution could be that Ukraine give up territories and get NATO membership in return,” he said.

At the same time, the official recalled that Kyiv, according to NATO, must independently decide on what conditions negotiations with Moscow should be conducted. He also announced “significant” movement on the issue of Ukraine’s future membership in NATO, noting that all countries are interested in not repeating the conflict.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg himself refused to discuss this issue, VG notes.

During the July summit in Vilnius, NATO member countries agreed on the conditions for Ukraine’s entry into NATO. Kyiv will be sent an invitation to join after all the conditions are met and the unanimous consent of all members of the bloc is reached. As noted, the “formal” conditions for joining the alliance will be softened for Kyiv, which will allow it to shorten the process of joining.

There were no clear dates for Ukraine’s entry into NATO. At the same time, Stoltenberg had previously stated that Ukraine could not be accepted into the alliance until the end of the conflict. In addition, after the summit, the G7 adopted a declaration on long-term security guarantees for Ukraine, which includes the supply of weapons. The Kremlin called such guarantees an encroachment on Russia’s security.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said earlier that NATO countries are actually fighting on the side of Ukraine, there is nowhere to get deeper into the conflict. Russian President Vladimir Putin back in September 2022 said that the Russian army in Ukraine was opposed to “virtually the entire military machine of the collective West.”
