Stoltenberg: only 7 out of 30 NATO countries increased defense spending to 2% of GDP

So far, only seven of NATO’s 30 member countries have been able to meet the target of increasing defense spending to 2% of GDP. This was announced by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg during the annual report for 2022.
“At the moment, the defense spending of seven NATO countries has reached 2% of GDP, we expected that there would be more,” the head of the North Atlantic Alliance said.
He also added that during the summit, which will be held in Vilnius in July, the countries of the military bloc will have to make new commitments – to increase military spending above 2% of GDP.
According to the Associated Press, NATO’s latest estimates show that only 10 countries are close to spending more than 2% of GDP, and another 13 member states of the alliance spend about 15% of GDP on defense or less.
