Stepashin: Putin will have to bear the “cross” of the presidency, whether he wants it or not

There is currently no replacement for Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to former Prime Minister Sergei Stepashin, who held this position from May to August 1999. According to him, Mr. Putin is obliged to run again for the presidency after the expiration of the current term in 2024.
“Probably, many thought whether in two years Putin should go to the presidency or not, I also thought about it. But now it is absolutely clear that there can be no replacement, especially in a situation of partial mobilization, in fact, active hostilities against NATO and the Americans,” Mr. Stepashin told RIA Novosti.
Nevertheless, Mr. Stepashin believes that “one cannot always be the leader of the country,” but given the current circumstances, Vladimir Putin needs to remain in office. “We must not repeat 1917, when Nicholas II’s inner circle, in fact, betrayed him. I believe that Putin, whether he wants to or not, will have to carry his cross before we can really make real peace, ”said the ex-chairman of the Russian government.
On May 7, 2018, the fourth presidential term of Vladimir Putin began. Prior to that, he became president in 2000, 2004 and 2012. The next Russian presidential election will take place in 2024. According to the amendments to the Russian Constitution in 2020, Vladimir Putin can be elected for a new term.
In October 2021, Mr Putin in an interview with CNBC informedthat has not yet decided to participate in the next presidential elections in the country. He did not answer a question about a successor.
