Step speed found to reduce risk of diabetes

Walking briskly at more than 4 kilometers per hour significantly reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes by 39 percent. This conclusion was reached by scientists from Imperial College London and Semnan University of Medical Sciences.
Comparing data from 10 earlier studies on more than half a million people, the scientists concluded that the risk of diabetes was highest among those who always walked at a walking pace, that is, at a speed of less than 3.2 kilometers per hour. Regular walking at a speed of 3.2 to 4.8 kilometers per hour was associated with a 15 percent reduction in the risk of diabetes, from 4.8 to 6.4 kilometers per hour by 24 percent, and above 6.4 kilometers per hour (i.e. twice as fast as a “walking step”) – by 39 percent.
The authors do not indicate whether their findings suggest that the connection between fast walking and a reduced risk of diabetes is precisely cause-and-effect (one can assume that both factors may be partly independent consequences of a third factor). However, the scientists suggest that their data will improve the effectiveness of type 2 diabetes prevention programs.
