One Stefan can hide another. The Swiss Stefan Bissegger won the time trial of the European Championships in Munich (27’06”), ahead of his compatriot Stefan Kung (+1”), double title holder, and the Italian world champion Filippo Ganna (+9”) at the end of 24 fairly hilly kilometres.
In the lead after 15.3 kilometers, Kung gave up his three-second lead at the end of the course. Ganna, in the 2nd intermediate shot (+2”) weakened at the end of the course, being content with the third step of the podium.
If Kung may regret a start that was perhaps too cautious (six seconds behind at the top of the first bump after 0.7 km of racing), Bissegger had the perfect race. Turning to perfection, unlike the Copenhagen time trial on the Tourthe 23-year-old rider won his first international title.
On the French side, no miracles. Kévin Vauquelin brilliantly honored his first senior selection (7th at 1’12”). Conversely, Anthony Roux, tenth in 2020, was disappointed (21st at 2’07”).
