State universities of Kalmykia, Buryatia and Tuva formed a consortium for the study of Buddhism

The state universities of Buryatia, Kalmykia, Tuva, as well as the Buddhist University “Dashi Choynhorlin” and the Aginsky Buddhist Academy created a consortium of universities “Buddhist Education”. According to press office government of Buryatia, agreements on the creation of a consortium were reached within the framework of the International Buddhist Forum, held in Ulan-Ude from 17 to 19 August.
The purpose of the association of universities is to consolidate the research potential of organizations that carry out educational work in the field of Buddhism. Among the tasks are also the creation of a state system for training specialists in Buddhism, strengthening the role of Russian Buddhism in the international arena. The consortium will be engaged in the formation and implementation of joint scientific and educational programs in the field of Buddhist theory and practice, joint training of highly qualified personnel.
With reference to the director of the Institute of Asian and African countries, Moscow State University. M. V. Lomonosov Alexei Maslov also notes that “a consortium of religious and secular universities was created for the first time in the history of Russia”, and other universities may join the association.
By information Buddhist traditional Sangha of Russia, the international forum is held as part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Buryatia, the center of Russian Buddhism. The forum is attended by official representatives from 14 countries, including Nepal, Mongolia, India, China, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Thailand.
