State Duma deputy from United Russia Sergei Sokol, who was hospitalized in Moscow, may soon withdraw his candidacy from the election of the head of Khakassia, reports Vedomosti And RBC with reference to his own sources surrounded by politicians and the administration of the President of the Russian Federation.
“If health [Сокола] will get worse, then [снять кандидатуру]”, – said one of the sources of RBC. “He is ill, he can act in film,” added a source close to the Kremlin.
According to Vedomosti, the Communist Party of the Russian Federation assumes that two more campaign participants will withdraw from the elections – Mikhail Molchanov from the Liberal Democratic Party and Vladimir Grudinin from the Communists of Russia. In this case, the elections in the republic would have been declared invalid and postponed indefinitely. The interlocutor of the newspaper in the presidential administration refutes this. The candidates from the Liberal Democratic Party and the Communists of Russia themselves also reported that they are not yet seriously considering the option of refusing to participate in the election campaign.
Officially, United Russia does not comment on the possible withdrawal of Sergei Sokol’s candidacy from the elections.
The day before, on August 31, Sergey Sokol was urgently hospitalized in one of the Moscow hospitals. According to RBC, the politician is in intensive care. According to Andrei Turchak, Secretary of the General Council of United Russia, doctors assess the condition of Sergei Sokol as heavy. The parliamentarian had an exacerbation after suffering peritonitis. In July, the deputy underwent an operation for appendicitis. He was diagnosed with venous mesenteric thrombosis and acute intestinal obstruction.
Sergei Sokol is a candidate for governor of Khakassia from the United Russia party, the main competitor of the incumbent governor, Valentin Konovalov, a candidate from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation. The election campaign in Khakassia is one of the most competitive. According to the sociological center INSOMAR, candidates from United Russia and the Communist Party of the Russian Federation have almost the same rating: 41% of voters were ready to vote for Sergei Sokol, and 40% for Valentin Konovalov. Elections in the republic are scheduled for September 10.
Sergei Sokol went to fight in Ukraine in the fall of 2022 as a volunteer; for several months he was a fighter of the BARS unit. After returning in April, he decided to run for governor of Khakassia from United Russia.
