State Duma deputy from the LDPR party Andrey Lugovoi proposed to toughen the punishment for high treason and espionage to life. “In this unusual time, this issue becomes especially relevant. It can be firmly asserted that as a result of treason, damage is inflicted not only on the state, but also the lives of Russian citizens are endangered. Therefore, we consider it absolutely justified to introduce a life sentence for treason,”— said deputy. In addition, Mr Lugovoy proposed deprive the accused of citizenship without the right to appeal.
Andrei Lugovoy also recalled that in the USSR for crimes under Art. 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (high treason) provided for execution. “In the 1990s, when a moratorium on the death penalty was introduced, the punishment was replaced with life imprisonment (conclusion.— “b”). Alexander Lugovoy has been a member of the State Duma from the LDPR since 2007.
