State Duma deputies quarreled over proposal to abolish English in schools

It’s time to remove English from the school curriculum – this morning began with such a proposal from the State Duma. Nothing, they say, to westernize and score on important things – there was barely a place for NVP in the schedules. Next in line are “classical” astronomy and drawing (works are still …) And in order to return something you need, you need to throw out the unnecessary. Or even harmful – for example, English.
The proposal was made by the deputy Sultan Khamzaev, known for his extravagant proposals. He already proposed to cancel the exam, he intended to remove the second foreign one. And now, the first one…
The deputy’s accompanying speech is full of pearls like “English became international only because it was put into the program”, or “the country needs … not only polyglots who know only English.” However, this proposal is discussed in all seriousness.
Yevgeny Revenko, deputy head of the United Russia faction, does not see anything shameful in him. They say that such a proposal is a personal initiative of Khamraev, but if “there is a request, then the society will discuss it.” True, German was taught during the Great Patriotic War. “You need to know the language of the enemy,” Revenko clarifies.
Does not exclude the pernicious influence of English on the minds and the “expert of all Rus'” Anatoly Wasserman. “The system of teaching English in our schools is wrong,” he said, “but it doesn’t matter, because it will be replaced by Chinese anyway.” Oleg Smolin also speaks about the benefits and necessity of Chinese, however, he believes that it is still not worth canceling English. But German, French, Spanish can also be compulsory foreign languages at school. Unfortunately, they are also, as a sin, European. But Nina Ostanina sees in Khamraev’s initiative a semblance of “the abolition of Russian culture” in the West: “Are we really ignoble like them?”…
A public discussion also unfolded – on the channel of the public ombudsman for family affairs, Olga Baranets. They say that in some schools in Moscow they decided to make open days for future first graders the days of the English language. Which is understandable: a good “English”, preferably from the 1st or 2nd grade, is the criterion for choosing a school for many parents. But these very days deeply outraged Baranets and the bulk of subscribers.
“The children sat and did not understand anything, absorbing the language of the English,” one patriotic lady paints the horror of “Angloization”. – At the same time, they were shown some freaks on an electronic board. This is how the president’s order to protect the Russian language and traditional spiritual values is being carried out! And the conclusion: “It looks like some kind of lair of traitors” …
The same type of passion for the “Englishwoman”, who “shits”, and, you see, she is taught in the first grade (“preparing to become a British colony”!), Diluted with the following maxim: “English is a very primitive, artificial language, I am aware that what I say, I teach it”…
“English is the most useful skill that can be taught in school, math science all over the world is written in English,” wrote one person. “Russian is the most useful skill!” – his opponents immediately soared. And they were offended: “Why is Russian not spoken in all countries?” And they accused the Angloman of sabotage.
It is only strange that none of those who are not yet ready to mix idiocy with patriotism spoke about the main reason for the importance of English for schoolchildren. It is not that one cannot erase business protocol, diplomatic and secular etiquette from life, which, in fact, are English. That it is impossible to abolish trade and banking interactions, logistics, transport, international transportation – in English. And the fact that all programming languages and in general everything related to IT is written in English. Abandoning it in high school would set the country back a century. Or forever. In the same China, they program in English, and in India, and in Africa. And in Russia too – for now! – while taking leading places in international competitions.
And if “the country needs strong specialists in various fields, primarily technical ones,” according to Khamraev, then it’s time for someone in the State Duma to turn on their brains. “We started with the mind – we finished with the mind,” as they say. And today, a clarification: artificial intelligence.
