The finalists of the startup competition of St. Petersburg University have developed a technology that can minimize the consequences of operations in the treatment of tumor diseases, informs RG.RU.
The method is based on the principle of gene therapy, which is already gaining popularity in the fight against uterine fibroids.
According to the press service of the university, the most common way to treat this benign tumor of the female organ is surgical removal. The operation can cause various gynecological diseases, infertility. The authors of the GenomeX project have found a treatment that reduces risks. Based on peptide carriers, they developed a non-viral nucleic acid delivery system.
As the team captain Alexander Baichikov said, for the patient “it’s just an injection.”
He explained: “A person comes to a clinic that is already treating uterine fibroids … and instead of surgical removal, he gives an injection into the uterus, ideally intravenously. And that’s all.”
In this case, the technology of peptide carriers can be used not only in the treatment of uterine fibroids, but also tumors of other organs and tissues.
The startup team is reportedly engaged in ex vivo research on tissue samples that are close to natural material. However, work has already been done on primary fibroid cells obtained from patients and on myoma nodes taken after fibroid removal. The next goals of the young scientists are to improve the technology and enter the Russian market.
