On February 16, St. Petersburg resident Konstantin Aksenov, together with Evgeny Yevtushenko, Anton Yakovlev and Vladimir Popov, were the first in the world to cross the Yucatan Strait on kites. Summing up the results of 2023 and remembering its records, “MK in St. Petersburg” decided to talk with Konstantin Aksenov about this achievement and future plans.
According to Aksenov, he really wanted to get to Mexico, and this gave him strength and allowed him to overcome a distance of 231 kilometers. This took the athlete 11 hours.
“I just really wanted to go to Mexico. I’ve never been there, so I was interested in seeing how the locals live. I was inspired by stories about Mexico from films and TV series”– said Aksenov.
According to the kiter, the most difficult thing was preparing for the transition and waiting for the start, the rest brought only joy and satisfaction. If there were more daylight hours and time for rental, this kite trip would be the most unforgettable, the kiter shared. But the wait and the road to the start were difficult, the record holder admitted.
“Waiting for a fair wind, we lived in a military hotel, where it was uncomfortable and the food was bad. There were a lot of mosquitoes and wild boars walking along the street.”– recalls Aksenov.
The athlete noted that he has set many records, but the kiter does not know where they are recorded. At the same time, Aksenov noted that he does not like to walk along the same route and break his own records.
“My team and I kite surf in the open ocean. That is, when we cross the ocean, we move from one country to another. And we are more interested in overcoming a new path every time. In this case, we can only set records by implementing kite travel plans along new routes. And they will be as interesting as Cuba-Mexico or Alaska-Chukotka”– the kiter shared.
This year Aksenov and his team are going to move from the Bahamas to Cuba. The flight to the starting point is scheduled for January 22. If everything works out, the team will hold a press conference in Gavan.
