Sri Lankan authorities are investigating a notice issued to Russians to cancel visa extensions

The Sri Lankan government at the official level did not make a decision to cancel the extension of visas previously issued to tourists from the Russian Federation and Ukraine, writes the local publication Ada Derana, citing the media department of the president of the island country.

Meanwhile, earlier, with reference to the Commissioner General of Immigration of Sri Lanka, Harsha Ilukpitiya reportedthat the extension of long-term tourist visas for thousands of Russians and Ukrainians has been stopped. The official noted that the deadline for departure from Sri Lanka is March 7.

Now, according to the media department, President Ranil Wickramasinghe has ordered an investigation into the notice requiring him to leave the country within 14 days. The corresponding requirement, as noted, was issued by the Department of Immigration and Emigration without the consent of the Cabinet of Ministers.

Consequently, the Sri Lankan government has not officially made a decision to cancel the extension of visas previously granted to Russian and Ukrainian tourists, the publication concludes.
