“Sport is the norm of life”: how Novgorodians will be accustomed to physical activity

On February 6, the Minister of Sports of Russia Oleg Matytsin spent a working day in the Novgorod region. At a meeting with the head of the region Andrey Nikitin, signed bilateral agreement on cooperation in the development of sports. “Sport is the norm of life” is a federal project that is part of the structure of the national project “Demography”. The initiative is aimed at attracting citizens to sports. The goal is to bring the share of Russians regularly engaged in various types of physical activity up to 70% by 2030. Now this figure barely exceeds 49%. The project has been active since January 1, 2019. As part of it, old sports facilities are being repaired and new ones are being built. The scale does not matter – it can be both a playground in the yard and a world-class sports palace. In Veliky Novgorod, for example, a regional figure skating center was opened at the end of January.
During the implementation of the project in the Novgorod region, the problem of the lack of places where citizens can comfortably go in for sports at any time of the year was solved. Now in each district of the region there is a full-fledged sports center. In addition, two more sports and recreation complexes are currently being built in the villages of Shimsk and Lyubytino. In total, almost 230 million rubles will be spent on them.
Another direction of the project is the holding of mass competitions, including the Ski Track of Russia and the Cross of the Nation. Thousands of residents of the Novgorod region annually take part in them. Also, in winter, the region hosts the “Decade of Sports and Health”, and in the summer – sports events dedicated to the “Athlete’s Day”.
