Boris Pistorius, Minister of the Interior of Lower Saxony, will become the new Minister of Defense of Germany after the resignation of Christine Lambrecht. writes Spiegel magazine.
Pistorius has long had political ambitions, the publication points out: back in 2019, he was nominated for the post of head of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). Thanks, among other things, to his populist rhetoric, he is considered one of the most influential ministers in Lower Saxony.
Pistorius was born in 1962, he has been the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Lower Saxony since 2013. From 2006 to 2013 he was the mayor of Osnabrück, and since 2017 he has been a member of the state parliament in Hannover (the administrative center of Lower Saxony).
Spiegel draws attention to the fact that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz promised that the cabinet of ministers would be equally composed of men and women. Now, with the advent of a male minister, another personnel reshuffle will be required to maintain this balance.
Lambrecht filed resigned on January 16 due to too much media attention to her person, which allegedly interferes with the normal work of the ministry. Lambrecht became the second minister to resign since Scholz took office. In April 2022, Anne Spiegel resigned as Minister for Families, Women, Senior Citizens and Youth following allegations of neglect in her previous position.
Prior to Lambrecht, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer was Minister of Defense. She replaced her party member Ursula von der Leyen in this post, who was elected head of the European Commission.
