Spiegel: Lithuania does not have money to support German soldiers near the borders with Russia

Lithuania does not have enough funds to finance the German military stationed on the Russian-Lithuanian border. The state will have to look for additional sources of funding, said the Minister of Defense of the Republic Arvydas Anusauskas, writes Spiegel.
The head of the defense department noted that in the next two years, financing infrastructure will become a huge problem.
The republic has allocated 600 million euros for infrastructure costs for the German military stationed on the border with Russia – this budget was planned in the summer of 2022. However, due to the deployment of the brigade on a permanent basis, the indicated amount is too low.
The publication notes that Germany does not yet know how much the Lithuanian brigade will cost. Preliminarily, the costs are estimated at five billion euros. It is also unclear where the state will get funds for infrastructure, materials, construction and maintenance of social institutions for children of military personnel, foreign benefits and transportation costs. The budget for 2024 does not mention these items.
Earlier it became known that the heads of the defense ministries of Germany and Lithuania signed an agreement on the deployment of 4.8 thousand German troops on the Russian-Lithuanian border.
The document provides for the transfer of the main units of Germany to Lithuania in 2025-2026. The brigade will be in full combat readiness by 2027.
