Spiegel: Count Lambsdorff could be the new German ambassador to Moscow

The deputy head of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) faction in the Bundestag, Alexander Graf Lambsdorf, will become the new German ambassador to Moscow, transmits edition of Spiegel, citing sources.
“For a long time there were rumors in Berlin coalition circles that Lambsdorff could become ambassador to the United States – this option is not being considered now,” the sources said. In this post, he will replace the current Ambassador of Germany in Moscow Geza Andreas von Geyr, who has been working in the diplomatic mission since 2019.
The newspaper notes that Lambsdorf repeatedly criticized the special operation in Ukraine, and also stated that he did not believe in the possibility of a diplomatic solution to the crisis.
Lambsdorf was a trainee at the European Workers’ Commission and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation in Tallinn. Since the mid 1990s. worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany, in particular, he was a press attaché of the German Embassy in Washington (USA). In 2004, he was first elected to the European Parliament, subsequently re-elected several times. In 2017, he was elected a member of the German Bundestag.
