Defense witness gave scandalous testimony
The trial of the ex-governor of the Khabarovsk Territory, Sergei Furgal, surprised with an unexpected turn. One of the witnesses, an ex-employee of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Khabarovsk Department of Internal Affairs, told a story under oath that could explain how and why the criminal case itself began.
If you believe his words, then the personal hostility in the past of a high-ranking Khabarovsk policeman Vladimir Pershin to Sergei Furgal became the reason.
Recall that earlier the ex-governor was removed from the hall “for violating order in court.” But Furgal’s absence from the trial was short-lived. It was returned to the next meeting on October 31. Moreover, they gave permission for the interrogation of one of the witnesses for the defense – Nikolai Shukhov. Why was it allowed and others banned?
“Shukhov testified at the investigation stage, which suited the law enforcement officers,” says lawyer Mikhail Karapetyan. – But since he himself became a defendant in a criminal case and was placed in the Lefortovo pre-trial detention center, we thought – what if he now says something new? And they weren’t wrong.
On Monday, October 31, Shukhov was interrogated in court. He looked bad, moved with a cane. He said that he had suffered a stroke – this is how his body reacted to the stress of criminal prosecution (a case was initiated against him under articles 159 and 210 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).
A little about Shukhov. He is a former employee of the criminal investigation department, moreover, his immediate superior was Mr. Vladimir Pershin (in this case, he played almost the main role, therefore it is worth remembering this surname). He worked in the police just at the time when contract killings took place, imputed to Furgal and his business partner Nikolai Mistryukov. After he left the organs (2008), he worked in Mistryukov’s company. And his former boss Pershin was put behind bars, found guilty of extortion.
Here is what Shukhov said at the trial. According to him, in 2019, Pershin, who was released, called him to the bathhouse. There, Vladimir “pretty took on his chest” and, against this background, opened up. According to Shukhov, he told about the following: that he hates Furgal and Mistryukov, and that FSB officers came to him in the colony, who offered a deal – parole and material benefits in exchange for testimony for these two. It was on his testimony that Karepov, Kadyrov and Mistryukov were detained back in 2019, and a little later, Furgal.
– I hope that I will be acquitted, – says the former governor. – And what is happening in court is simply amazing.
Furgal is referring to his removal and refusal to interview virtually all defense witnesses. But the witnesses for the prosecution were interrogated, including those who were not even familiar with Furgal at the time of the acts incriminated to him. He cites as an example the interrogation (on the assassination attempt in 2004) of businessmen who first learned about Furgal only in 2006, and began to conduct their business affairs with him even later.
Furgal also has questions for individual jurors. One of them (the one, because of whose wedding the process was postponed for a long time) for the second time was awarded a petition for a challenge. The reason was a dismissive, according to Furgal, statement. Thus, he expressed a negative attitude towards him, which he should not have done under any circumstances under the current legislation.
