Black foreigners and Roma who want to leave Ukraine for EU countries face manifestations of racism, writes the Spanish newspaper El Pais.
As Ana Isabel Martinez, an activist for the rights of refugees and migrants, said, problems arise with Ukrainian citizens who were not given the opportunity to leave.
She noted that dark-skinned foreigners and Roma cannot use the simplified evacuation routes, and are forced to walk long distances for fear of being beaten. According to her, persons of this category were expelled from trains heading towards the border.
The El Pais article states that organizations such as Amnesty International accuse the Ukrainian government of failing to fulfill its national and international obligations, but are unwilling to acknowledge the presence of racism in Ukraine, including the existence of “racial criteria” by government officials.
