Spanish Football Federation President Resigns After Kissing Scandal

Luis Rubiales has tendered his resignation as president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation. He also left his post as UEFA vice-president. The head of the federation was previously temporarily suspended from many positions for kissing a football player on the lips during the award ceremony for the Spanish women’s team after winning the World Cup final.
Mr. Rubiales wrote on the social network X that he had notified the acting president of the Spanish federation, Pedro Roche, of his resignation. “I do not want Spanish football to suffer from this disproportionate campaign and, above all, I take this decision after being convinced that my departure will contribute to stability,” Mr. Rubiales wrote.
Now the former president of the Spanish federation said that he would do everything to ensure that “the truth prevails.” He thanked his family and others for their support during this time.
In August, the Spanish women’s team beat England 1-0 in the World Cup final. During the award ceremony, Luis Rubiales kissed the team captain, 33-year-old soccer player Jennifer Hermoso, on the lips. After this, the football player said that she did not like the actions of Luis Rubiales. Madrid prosecutors are investigating allegations of sexual assault.
