Space rockets will be reinforced with volcanic rock

Perm scientists have proposed a new composite – basalt, which is formed during the crystallization of magma

Specialists of the Perm National Research Polytechnic University were able to increase the strength of space technology due to volcanic rock – basalt.

One of the problems in the creation of space technology is the large mass of devices and their high cost. PNI proposed an option that combines ultra-strength, simplicity and low production costs. This was achieved by replacing the reinforcing (reinforcing) material that is applied over the steel structures of the rocket. If earlier more expensive carbon fiber or fiberglass was used for this, Permian scientists proposed instead basalt fiber of igneous origin, the raw materials for which are abundant in our country, for example, in Kamchatka, where many volcanoes erupt.

The design using this composite material, in addition to low price, has other important advantages: it withstands strong overloads and large temperature differences. Its unique physico-chemical and thermal characteristics allow for the winding of fewer layers when reinforcing than is required when using other materials.

As an experiment, scientists applied three layers of basalt fiber to a steel frame tube to which a space rocket engine is attached. In the future, they can strengthen (without increasing the mass of products) landing lunar or Martian modules, combustion chambers of jet systems. The material will be suitable for thermal protection.
