The Speaker of the Parliament of South Ossetia announced negotiations on accession to the Russian Federation
Chairman of the Parliament of South Ossetia Alan Alborov, in a conversation with RIA Novosti, reported on negotiations on accession to the Russian Federation.
According to him, negotiations are being conducted in close coordination with the Russian authorities. He also noted that the issues of holding a referendum in South Ossetia on joining the Russian Federation are also being discussed.
“We are discussing all these issues in close coordination with the Russian Federation, taking into account our bilateral relations and agreements,” said the chairman of the South Ossetian parliament.
According to him, his country’s accession to the Russian Federation will occur after the parties “come to this idea.”
South Ossetia was formerly part of the Georgian SSR. In 1992, South Ossetia declared independence, and in August 2008, Georgia attempted to regain control of its territory by force. As a result of the Russian army’s operation to force peace, Georgian troops were driven back, and the armed confrontation lasted 5 days. At the end of August, Moscow recognized the independence of Abkhazia.
The possibility of holding a referendum in South Ossetia on the issue of joining Russia was reported last year. However, Alan Gagloev, who won the presidential election, considered it necessary to first hold consultations with Russia, and the referendum was postponed. Georgia stated that it was going to peacefully restore the territorial integrity of the country.
