The idea of creating an “Asian NATO” is not being considered by the South Korean authorities, said Foreign Minister Pak Chin, speaking at the Munich Security Conference.
At the same time, according to him, Seoul intends to expand cooperation with the North Atlantic Alliance. Pak Chin said that the situation on the European continent directly affects the situation, stability and peace in the Asia-Pacific region.
He called South Korea “NATO’s global partner” and announced plans to discuss with Brussels options for overcoming existing challenges, including the situation in Ukraine, as well as NATO’s role in ensuring peace on the Korean Peninsula. Pak Chin also expressed his hope for NATO’s “productive and meaningful engagement” with South Korea and Japan.
Earlier, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi called NATO a reliable partner. Cooperation with the alliance, he said, will help “preserve and strengthen a free and open international order based on the letter of the law.”
