Sony is accused of abuse of dominant position in the UK

Sony, the Japanese electronics and video game giant, is accused by Resolve, a British consumer protection site, of abuse of a dominant position. The PlayStation maker is being sued in the UK Competition Appeal Court for allegedly imposed unfair conditions on developers which then pass on prices “excessive and unfair” on consumers for software sold on his PlayStation.
The complaint was filed on August 19 by Alex Neill, chief executive of consumer advocacy site Resolve, on behalf of nearly 9 million Sony PlayStation customers in the UK. According to Resolve, the case could cost Sony 5 billion pounds (5.9 billion euros), each plaintiff could claim damages between 67 and 562 pounds (between 79.36 and 665.64 euros) excluding interests.

An additional cost estimated at 30%
Sony and PlayStation are accused of charging 30% commission on every digital game or in-game purchase from the PlayStation store. “Video games are now the main entertainment in the UK, ahead of TV, video, music (…). Sony shares are costing people millions they can’t afford to spend, especially when we’re in the midst of a cost of living crisis.”explains Alex Neill in the press release. “Sony dominates the digital distribution of PlayStation games and has deployed an anti-competitive strategy that has resulted in excessive prices for customers, out of all proportion to the costs incurred by Sony to provide its services”says Natasha Pearman, of the law firm Milberg London LLP, which acts on behalf of Resolve.
Sony has not yet reacted.
