The current mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin, has submitted documents for the nomination for the election of the mayor of the capital to the Moscow City Electoral Commission (Mosgorizbirkom). This was reported in the Telegram channel of the Moscow City Regional Branch (MGRO) of the United Russia party.
“According to the provisions of the Electoral Code of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin personally submitted to the commission an application for consent to run, information about income and property, as well as other necessary documents,” says in the message.
The documents were accepted, checked and issued to Sobyanin a written confirmation and a certificate of permission to open a special electoral account for the creation and formation of the candidate’s electoral fund.
On June 9, United Russia supported the nomination of Sobyanin for the election of the mayor of Moscow. 275 delegates voted for him. His formal rival was Pyotr Tolstoy, secretary of the Moscow regional branch, State Duma vice-speaker.
Sobyanin ran for mayor for the first time, running from United Russia. The politician ran for the elections of 2013 and 2018 as a self-nominated candidate. In the elections to the State Duma in 2021, Sobyanin headed the party list in Moscow.
The mayor’s rivals in this campaign will be Moscow City Duma deputy Leonid Zyuganov (KPRF), State Duma deputy Dmitry Gusev (A Just Russia), State Duma vice speaker Vladislav Davankov (New People) and State Duma vice speaker Boris Chernyshov (LDPR). However, these parties have not yet held a conference of regional branches to nominate candidates for mayor.
The Moscow City Duma scheduled elections on June 7. They last three days – from 8 to 10 September. Remote electronic voting will be used in the mayoral elections. Former press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov declaredthat the head of state Vladimir Putin highly appreciates the results of the work of the current mayor of Moscow.
