Sobyanin: Moscow is in the top 5 largest megacities in the world in terms of exports

Despite the departure of some brands from the country, the number of enterprises in Moscow increased by 20% in eight months. This was announced by the mayor of the capital, Sergei Sobyanin, to the head of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Russian Federation, Mikhail Mishustin, during the inspection of the stand “Made in Moscow” at the international expert forum “Made in Russia”.
The head of Moscow noted that in eight months, investments in industry have almost doubled. Sobyanin admitted that the growth was caused by the action of federal and regional support measures and the demand for import substitution.
“Since 2019, we have grown in comparable prices by 36%,” the mayor added. He explained that 14,000 enterprises now operate in the capital, employing 700,000 people.
Sergei Sobyanin called Moscow the No. 1 city in the manufacturing industry. But there are also pharmaceutical, aviation and space enterprises in the capital.
In the next five years, the Moscow authorities want to come out on top in the field of pharmaceutical production. Now four plants are being built as part of offset deals.
In addition, Sobyanin called it an important task to take a leading position in the food industry, in mechanical engineering and in the production of building materials. In this industry, Moscow ranks seventh, but the launch of new clusters in the next three to four years could change the situation.
At the end of 2021, the total turnover of goods (15.3 trillion rubles) and services (2.1 trillion rubles) in Moscow amounted to 17.4 trillion rubles. This puts the capital in fourth place in terms of exports among the largest metropolitan areas in the world.
Prime Minister Mishustin thanked the mayor of the capital for the development of industry. He noted that comfortable and cozy Moscow hides technological and environmentally friendly production.
“In this sense, the fact that you are localizing very complex, technologically complex elements related to the development of industries, electric transport, as you said, in order to become the main production cluster, largely in electric transport, this simply cannot but rejoice,” said the head of the cabinet.
