The departures of American F-16 fighters, which are at the disposal of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) from the air bases of NATO countries, are a red line for the Russian side. Vice Speaker of the Slovak Parliament Lubos Blaga warned about this on Wednesday, December 13.

The politician held a meeting with the Russian Ambassador to Slovakia Igor Bratchikov, during which the Russian diplomat spoke “about an important issue.” Moscow believes that “some Western countries are going to directly join the war in Ukraine by providing their airfields for Ukrainian F-16 fighters.”

Blaga called on Bratislava to “remain on the side of peace,” warning that the escalation of the conflict between the North Atlantic Alliance and Russia could provoke World War III.

The reason for the heated discussion of the topic of the use of Western fighters by the Ukrainian military was the statement of the head of the Russian delegation at the negotiations in Vienna on military security and arms control, Konstantin Gavrilov. He emphasized that Moscow will consider the flights of F-16 fighter jets from air bases in Poland, Romania and Slovakia as the participation of these countries in hostilities in Ukraine, and this very fact will force Russia retaliate.

At the same time, military expert, reserve colonel Anatoly Matviychuk noted that while Ukrainian aircraft practically do not take part in battles, Ukraine has managed to relocate a significant part of its military aviation to areas remote from the places of hostilities. But fighters “they can carry out raids from Romanian territory”the expert believes.
