Slovakia fires intelligence chief suspected of participating in criminal group

Slovak President Zuzana Caputova fired the head of the Slovak Information Service (SIS), the country’s counterintelligence agency, Michal Alach, writes dennikn.sk.
The president fired Alaç at the suggestion of the government. Instead, the post of head of the service will be taken by Tomas Rusiszek, who previously served as deputy head of intelligence.
On August 20, Chaputova removed Alach from her official duties. The day before, he was detained on suspicion of creating a criminal group and abuse of authority, but after legal proceedings he was released.
Slovak Prime Minister Ludovit Odor said earlier that if Alaç retains his post, it will jeopardize the good name of the service at home and abroad and undermine its credibility. He specified that two prosecutors confirmed the validity of the prosecution of Alach.
According to the investigation, Alach was a member of a criminal group whose purpose was to interfere with the investigation of corruption cases, the media wrote. The group was led by one of the Slovak businessmen with connections in the security services. Other members of the security services also appear in the case, including Alach’s predecessor.
