Skillbox and VK: 9% of Russians study English to move abroad

The “English language” section of the Skillbox online educational platform and the VK research team conducted a survey of Russians on the topic of learning English. According to the survey, 53% of those surveyed want to communicate fluently in English. However, only 7% of respondents study it. 55% of them are self-taught.

The desire to communicate fluently in English is common among Russians aged 18 to 24. Every third respondent has never studied English. 42% of respondents abandoned classes.
29% of respondents consider their main motivation for learning a language to be able to communicate freely with people from different countries of the world. 16% explain their plans for learning English with the desire to watch films and read books in the original, 13% want to find a job abroad. Some respondents (9%) want to learn the language in connection with the prospects of relocation or meeting foreigners (6%).
24% of respondents have only written English skills, while they do not perceive English well by ear and have difficulty maintaining a conversation. 33% have fragmentary knowledge. Only 6% of respondents believe that they are fluent in English. 21% of respondents named the lack of speaking practice and problems with memorizing words, tenses and grammar as the main difficulties.
41% of respondents spoke about the experience of communicating with foreigners in English, 34% interact with them in social networks, 21% – crossed paths on the street. Every fourth woman and every tenth man meet foreigners during their holidays. Every third of those respondents who spoke about romantic relationships with foreigners have never studied English. 33% of international couples speak Russian. 24% of such couples communicate in English.
