The Investigative Committee has charged the co-chairman of the Golos movement (recognized as a foreign agent in Russia) Grigory Melkonyants, a Vedomosti correspondent reports.

The investigation asked the court to arrest him until October 17.

On August 17, it became known that the UK aroused criminal case against Melkonyants on the fact of organizing the work of an undesirable NGO in Russia. The security forces conducted searches both at Melkonyants himself and at 14 of his associates in eight regions of Russia. A case was initiated against Melkonyants under Part 3 of Art. 284.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The maximum penalty under this article is six years in prison.

August 18, CEC chairwoman Ella Pamfilova expressed hope for an objective trial in the case of one of the leaders of Golos. She noted that “his often professional critique sometimes helped us a lot.”

Grigory Melkonyants is 42 years old. He works as a lawyer, appears in the media as an electoral expert and co-chairman of the “Voice” movement, which monitors the elections.

The movement was founded in 2000 and recognized as a foreign agent in 2013. In 2016, it was liquidated at the suit of the Ministry of Justice, but continued to work as an unregistered entity. In 2021, Golos was included in the register of unregistered organizations-foreign agents.
