Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said that since January 1, the Russian Armed Forces have accepted over 117,400 people for contract service and voluntary formations. He said this at a meeting on recruitment for military service under the contract.

“According to the Ministry of Defense, as a result of the activities carried out with the participation, including the participants of the current meeting, from January 1 to May 19, 117,400 people were accepted into the ranks of the Armed Forces on a contract and as part of our voluntary formations. Accordingly, we will proceed from this figure in the course of our further work,” said Dmitry Medvedev (quoted from “RIA News”).

The Deputy Chairman of the Security Council noted that the work on staffing the RF Armed Forces with contract servicemen continues in accordance with the decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin. It is not clear which order is being referred to. Sources in the Security Council who were present at the meeting told RIA Novosti that recruitment under the contract is proceeding at a “very good pace.”

In March, Bloomberg, citing “sources familiar with the planning,” informedthat the governments of the Russian regions have lowered quotas for the recruitment of a total of 400 thousand contract soldiers. In the regions of the Russian Federation, the agency noted, they began to send summonses to the draft boards, where citizens are invited to sign a contract for service.

In mid-March, reports began to appear in the media and social networks about the dispatch of subpoenas to the military registration and enlistment offices. According to the head of the human rights organization “Agora” Pavel Chikov (recognized as a foreign agent), as of March 15, reports of subpoenas came from 43 regions. In the military registration and enlistment offices of some regions “Kommersant” explainedthat the subpoenas are sent for the purpose of “reconciliation of data” as part of the work on the digital database of military records.

In early April, the Moscow government announced about the launch of a hotline for those who want to enter the military service under a contract. May 15 Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the simplified acquisition of Russian citizenship for foreigners who have signed a contract for military service. A simplified procedure is also being introduced for members of their families.
