Sibyle Veil seeks a second term at the head of Radio France

It launches without knowing if the fusion of the audio-visual public will take place.

Tuesday morning, Sibyle Veil, the president of Radio France, gathered the employees of the group to announce to them that she is a candidate for her own succession for a new five-year term. The Arcom, the audiovisual regulator has opened the process, and all potential suitors have until October 21 to apply. Arcom will then make a selection and appoint the future president in mid-April 2023.

Sibyle Veil has made the decision to run for a new term this summer. A particular period for the leaders of the public audiovisual sector since it was marked by the vote in Parliament for the abolition of the license fee and its replacement for two years by a fraction of VAT. It was also marked by the government’s desire to open “by the end of the year” a debate on the future of public broadcasting in which the question of a merger of the various entities France Télévisions, Radio France, France Médias Monde, INA will be examined. Sibyle Veil, in an interview with Figaro June 23 had clearly positioned itself on the subject “ I am not in favor of the merger of public broadcasting”.

Today his position has not changed. “The government wishes to open a public debate on public broadcasting. If I am famous, I want to carry the voice of Radio France in this debate “, she explains. The boss of the Round House declares “By definition, there is no certainty about the outcome of a debate before it has taken place, but I want to take my responsibilities as I have always done for seven years in this house. »

To be a candidate for the presidency of Radio France in April 2023 is to take a bet on a very uncertain future. It is not knowing what budget we will have because the financial trajectory of public broadcasting entities will not be known until the end of September with the debate on the finance bill. It is not knowing which structure we will lead, because the outline of public broadcasting will depend on the debate in Parliament. It is, finally, not knowing what the term of office will be, because if there is a merger, governance will have to be overhauled. “As I write to you, I cannot therefore tell you in what precise framework the next five years will unfold” she wrote in an email sent to employees.

Arcom report

“In 2018, when I applied for the presidency of Radio France, the situation was the same. There was a debate on the creation of a common holding company for public broadcasting and the financial trajectory of reducing budgets was not yet revealed”, recalls Sibyle Veil. It was before the Covid pandemic which had buried the reform of public broadcasting for a time.

If she is launching today, it is, she says, becausea house as complex as Radio France needs stability. But also, quite simply, because I want to, it’s a house where you can do really useful things.”. But also because his record at the head of the institution was hailed by Arcom in July 2022.“Three major successes must be credited to Radio France during the period: audience success, the evolution of the digital strategy and the democratization of culture, particularly for young audiences”, points out the report.
