The UN believes that as a result of the destruction of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station, up to 700 thousand people may face a shortage of drinking water. the destruction of the station will also lead to a decrease in food exports from Ukraine and an increase in food prices in the world, said Martin Griffiths, deputy secretary general of the organization.
“There is a looming problem of lack of quality drinking water for these 700,000 people,” Griffiths said. noting that we are talking about residents of territories controlled by both Ukraine and Russia.
According to him, the humanitarian situation in the region has deteriorated sharply, while experts believe that the global consequences have yet to be assessed. Griffiths said that the UN had provided assistance to 30,000 residents of flooded areas controlled by Ukraine. He also announced a meeting with the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Vasily Nebenzey, the purpose of which is to discuss the admission of employees of the organization to the territories controlled by Russia.
