Shoigu discussed the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh with the Minister of Defense of Armenia

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu held talks with his counterpart from Armenia Suren Papikyan, during which the parties discussed the activities of the Russian peacekeeping mission in Nagorno-Karabakh. This was reported in the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

“We have something to discuss, there are traditional issues related to our military-technical and military cooperation. And, of course, issues related to the activities of our peacekeeping contingent, which performs tasks in Nagorno-Karabakh,” quotes Shoigu TASS.

The head of the Russian military department added that further stabilization of the situation in the region is possible only if the parties observe the ceasefire regime.

The meeting took place within the framework of the X Moscow Conference on International Security.

Earlier on August 8, the situation in Karabakh discussed by phone, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

On August 3, in the region of the Lachin corridor, clashes between the armed forces of Azerbaijan and the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) took place, ending with the occupation by Azerbaijani troops of a number of heights that allow them to exercise fire control over the highway of the Lachin corridor. The Kremlin then called on the parties to exercise restraint and respect the tripartite peace agreements.

On November 9, 2020, Armenia and Azerbaijan, through the mediation of Russia, signed an agreement that put an end to the armed conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh that began on September 27, 2020. Baku and Yerevan agreed on the exchange of prisoners and the bodies of the dead. Under the agreement, the Armenian troops were withdrawn from the region, and the unrecognized NKR liberated a number of regions that came under the control of Azerbaijan.

The observance of the truce and the security of the so-called Lachin corridor from Armenia to Karabakh until 2025 is monitored by Russian peacekeepers.
