August 21 marks the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the Suvorov and Nakhimov military schools in our country. Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu congratulated everyone who studied and is studying in these educational institutions, as well as teachers and educators on this date. “Today it is an effective school for educating comprehensively developed citizens, true patriots of Russia,” the minister said in his congratulation.

The system of pre-university military education of the Russian Army includes 11 Suvorov military schools, the Nakhimov Naval School located in St. Petersburg and its four branches in Sevastopol, Vladivostok, Kaliningrad and Murmansk. In addition, seven Presidential cadet schools and nine cadet corps have been established. In September, the Irkutsk Suvorov Military School will open, and in 2024, a branch of the Nakhimov Naval School in Mariupol.

According to the Minister of Defense, the innovative education system, combined with initial military training, “provides a high level of education, allows students to instill immutable moral values, lay the foundation for professional self-determination.” Most of the Suvorov, Nakhimov and cadets enter military schools and academies, and then replenish the officer corps.

The first nine Suvorov military schools were formed during the Great Patriotic War. In October 1943, the Nakhimov Naval School was formed in Tbilisi. The Suvorovites of the first set were Kolya Gastello – the son of the Hero of the Soviet Union, pilot Nikolai Gastello, Artur and Valentin Chapaev – the grandchildren of the legendary commander.
