Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu appointed Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov instead of Sergei Surovikin as commander of the Joint Group of Special Operations Forces in Ukraine. This is reported by the Ministry of Defense. Sergei Surovikin was appointed deputy commander.
“The increase in the level of leadership of a special operation is associated with the expansion of the scale of the tasks being solved, the need to organize closer interaction between the types and branches of the troops,” the Ministry of Defense explained.
