Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of Staff of the National People’s Army of Algeria Said Shanegrikha held talks. About it reported in the Russian military department.
Shoigu noted that Russia is interested in Algeria’s leading position in strengthening regional security in northern Africa. “For its part, the Russian Defense Ministry is ready to help increase the combat capabilities of the Algerian armed forces,” the minister said. He also added that Moscow has always supported the right of states to make sovereign decisions on all issues, including in the field of national security.
Shanegrikha noted the memory of Algeria about the position of the USSR in the Algerian revolution and about Russia’s help in strengthening the defense capability of the republic. “[Обороноспособность] will allow us to transcend the possible potential threats that we face and the dangers in all conditions and in all challenges that our state is currently facing in the 21st century. Taking into account the fact that all this is supported by Western destructive behavior,” he said during the talks.
In addition, Shoigu recalled that a declaration on in-depth strategic partnership was signed between the countries. This is a “clear signal” to the world that Russia and Algeria plan to pursue an independent foreign policy and defend their national interests, Shoigu stressed.
In June, Russian President Vladimir met with Algerian President Abdelmajid Tebbun. Following the talks, they signed a declaration on an in-depth strategic partnership between the two countries. In addition, the leaders of Russia and Algeria agreed on cooperation in the field of the use of outer space for peaceful purposes by signing an appropriate agreement. At the same time, Tebbuin thanked Russia for the supply of weapons, as this allows us to maintain the country’s independence.
