Several Russians have signed a declaration of neutrality to participate in Wimbledon

Declaration of neutrality for participation in the Wimbledon tennis tournament was signed by several Russian and Belarusian tennis players. This was announced by Sally Bolton, Executive Director of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), the organizer of Wimbledon.

“Once we announced our decision, the players were able to sign the declarations, and they can do so until the deadline for applications. I won’t share the details of who has already done this, but a number of players have already signed the document. We listened to the feedback from the athletes over the past year and they said they wanted to be able to sign the declaration. They fully understand what they are signing up for,” said Sally Bolton, quoted by Reuters.

In 2022, Russians and Belarusians were not allowed to take part in Wimbledon. In response, the international associations ATP and WTA fined the tournament and stripped it of its ranking points.

To participate in Wimbledon in 2023, Russians and Belarusians must sign a declaration of neutrality. They will compete under a neutral flag, and they will also be prohibited from speaking out in support of the actions of the Russian army in Ukraine. Athletes receiving funding from Russia or Belarus, as well as from companies controlled by their governments, will not be allowed to participate in Wimbledon.
