Seven-time world champion and nine-time USSR bandy champion Nikolai Durakov died on March 9 in Yekaterinburg, reported press service of the Russian Bandy Federation. Mr. Durakov was 89 years old.

President of the Russian Bandy Federation Boris Skrynnik told TASS that Nikolai Durakov had a stroke several years ago. He noted that the federation is in contact with the athlete’s relatives and is ready to provide them with all the necessary assistance. “As for farewell, I tried to find out exactly, I was told that it would be in two days, but this is still inaccurate. Probably some events dedicated to him will be held. Of course, the federation will provide all the necessary assistance to the relatives,” added Mr. Skrynnik.

Nikolai Durakov was born on December 5, 1934. From 1953 to 1954 he played for Metallurg from Nizhny Tagil. From 1954 to 1976, Nikolai Durakov played in Sverdlovsk SKA, with whom he became a nine-time USSR champion. As a member of the USSR national team, he became world champion seven times. In 1974, as part of the team, he won the European Cup. Awarded the Order of Courage, Honor and the Order of the Badge of Honor. In 2022, a six-meter-tall “Epoch” monument dedicated to the athlete was opened near the Ekaterinburg Arena.
