Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and the head of the self-proclaimed Republic of Kosovo (Serbia considers it an autonomous territory of Kosovo and Metohija) Albin Kurti held a round of negotiations in Brussels, but could not find a compromise, informs “RIA Novosti” with reference to the head of the foreign policy service of the European Union, Josep Borrell. The discussion will continue in the coming days.
“We have not yet reached an agreement, but this is not the end of the story. Both leaders agreed on the need to continue the dialogue, negotiations will resume in the coming days. As long as there is time until September 1, I do not give up, ”he said.
He noted that there are still disagreements between the parties on the status of relations between Serbia and Kosovo, but both leaders see no alternatives but to continue the dialogue. Vučić and Kurti are ready to continue dialogue on a regular basis in the near future, Borrell said.
Earlier, the head of the EU foreign policy service announced the convening of a meeting of the High-Level Dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina. “Recent tensions in northern Kosovo have once again demonstrated that the time has come to move forward towards full normalization. I expect both leaders to be open and flexible to find common ground.” wrote diplomat on his Twitter.
On the evening of July 31, the situation in Kosovo escalated due to the decision of Pristina to refuse to use Serbian documents. Vucic then said that Pristina plans to invalidate Serbian documents in Kosovo.
In turn, the Pristina authorities said that all Serbs entering the unrecognized entity would receive a temporary border crossing document. This announcement was made in response to Belgrade’s unwillingness to recognize certificates issued in Kosovo. As a result, in the northern part of the city of Mitrovica, populated mainly by Serbs, citizens began to build barricades.
On August 1, the Kosovo government decided postpone adoption of the law on non-recognition of Serbian documents on the territory of the unrecognized republic until September 1, 2022
