The Serbian Football Federation has been fined $21,000 for a political banner that was placed in the dressing room before the match with Brazil in the first round of the group stage of the World Cup in Qatar. According to the Associated Press, this flag depicted a map of Serbia, which included the territory of Kosovo, and there was also the slogan “Do not give up.”
When opening the case, FIFA cited a section of the disciplinary code dealing with misconduct, including “offensive gestures and signs or language” and “using a sporting event to express unsportsmanlike conduct.”
Recall that when Kosovo declared its independence in 2008, Serbia did not recognize the sovereignty of the republic and considers it an autonomous region in its composition.
