Sentence to Ivan Safronov to be announced on September 5

The verdict in the case of treason to the ex-special correspondent of Kommersant and Vedomosti, adviser to the head of Roskosmos, Ivan Safronov, will be delivered on September 5 at 16:00. This was announced by the human rights project “The First Department” in its Telegram channel. Later, the press service of the Moscow City Court reported that the staged part of the verdict would be held in open mode.
Today, August 30, the debate of the parties took place in the Moscow City Court. Prosecutor Boris Loktionov requested for Ivan Safronov 24 years in a strict regime colony. Ivan Safronov does not admit his guilt. Hearings are held behind closed doors.
The defense of Mr. Safronov said that the investigation offered him a deal: he could plead guilty and receive 12 years in prison. Mr. Safronov refused it.
Ivan Safronov was detained and arrested on July 7, 2020. The investigation accuses him of two episodes of cooperation with the Czech and German intelligence structures. In June, a witness from the defendant’s inner circle testified about the legal origin of the amounts, which were initially regarded as “payment for espionage,” Kommersant found out. Another witness did not rule out that the criminal case was connected with Mr. Safronov’s critical assessments of shortcomings in the defense industry of the Russian Federation.
