Soviet and Russian seismologist Andrei Nikonov died in Moscow at the age of 92, TASS reported, citing operational services. The cause of death is unknown.
Andrei Nikonov worked at the Institute of Earth Physics named after. O. Yu. Shmidt of the Russian Academy of Sciences for 66 years. In 1989, he organized a paleoseismology laboratory at the Institute, where he worked first as a leading and then as a chief researcher for 25 years. Andrei Nikonov compiled several scientific publications on current issues of seismology, with the help of which he was able to overestimate the seismic potential of a number of regions of Russia, mainly in its western part. During his life he published more than 800 scientific papers.
