World Athletics (WA) president Sebastian Coe was re-elected on Thursday for a third and final four-year term allowed by the WA regulations. Coe, 66, received 192 of the 195 WA congressional delegates. He was re-elected on a non-alternative basis.

At the same time as the presidential election, other WA leaders were also chosen, including vice presidents. The famous Soviet athlete, Olympic champion of the 1988 Games in pole vaulting Sergey Bubka lost his post of first vice-president of WA. Note that the resignation of Mr. Bubka was expected. Mr. Bubka never put forward his candidacy for the post he has held since 2015. Some time ago it became known that Sergei Bubka and his relatives are the founders of Mont Blanc LLC, which is registered in the Donetsk People’s Republic. At the same time, Mr. Bubka has a TIN, which begins with the numbers 91, which means registration in Crimea. Considering this, there was practically no opportunity for Mr. Bubka to retain the post of vice president of WA.

After re-election, Sebastian Coe answered a question about the prospects for the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in the 2024 Games in Paris. “It is unlikely that Russian and Belarusian athletes will get to the Olympics. The WA Council has taken a clear position, I would be very surprised if it changes. We did this for the integrity of the competition. Of course, we will monitor the situation, we have a working group. However, it does not look like it will change, given what is happening in Ukraine,” Coe told reporters at a press conference.
