The planet Mars 4 billion years ago could be inhabited by hydrogen-absorbing microorganisms. They disappeared due to the fact that their vital activity lowered the temperature to fatal indicators for them, the Guardian writes with reference to French scientists.
One of the authors of the study, Boris Soterey, said that the microorganisms presumably absorbed hydrogen and produced methane. To protect them from radiation, they needed only a few centimeters of rock.
“Similar microorganisms could have colonized any part of Mars that was not covered with ice,” the expert noted.
The absorption of hydrogen from the atmosphere resulted in the fact that the temperature on the planet dropped by 200 degrees Celsius, as a result, all organisms died.
