Experts initially incorrectly assessed the power of the solar flare and the speed of the plasma flow ejected by it, which led to a strong magnetic storm. This is stated in message on the website of the Laboratory of Solar X-ray Astronomy of the Space Research Institute (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics (ISTP) of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
The ejection of a plasma cloud by the Sun towards the Earth was detected by the LASCO space coronagraphs on November 3. It coincided in time with an extremely weak solar flare, which can at least somehow be observed from Earth. LASCO scientists identified him with it.
“By all indications, the release was considered ordinary. Based on this, as well as on the measured speed of the cloud, the arrival of plasma to the Earth was expected on November 6 and was indicated in forecasts by all world agencies as a weak magnetic storm of level G1, that is, the lowest class,” the report says.
However, as specialists from the Institute of Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the ISTP of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences concluded, in fact it turned out that the gas clouds traveled a distance of 150 million km from the Sun to the Earth in just two days and ultimately hit the Earth’s magnetic field a day earlier than expected and with a significantly higher greater strength.
The storm is currently classified as G3, which means “severe” on the five-indicator monitoring scale (G5 is extremely strong, G1 is weak). The last time a G5 storm was recorded was on September 11, 2005.
The solar flare resulted in a strong magnetic storm and auroras visible from unusual regions on November 5th. About the polar lights reported, in particular, residents of the Perm Territory, Kaliningrad, Novosibirsk regions, Tatarstan, Krasnodar Territory, Crimea and other regions. The natural phenomenon was also reported in regions of Ukraine.
