Geographer Patrick Nunn suggested that one of the legends of the Australian Lardil people may be the oldest legend known to modern mankind.
Representative of the Lardil people, artist Dick Rowsey. in the 1970s he published a collection of legends passed down from generation to generation, which he heard, among others. The book, called “The Moon and the Rainbow”, mentions, among other things, an overland route connecting the Australian mainland with the Wesley Islands. The sea separated them during the Ice Age.
The legend tells of a man who caused the sea to rise in the path of his wives who were trying to escape him. The water separated Kangaroo Island from Australia, and the women became the shallow Pages Islands. The events rethought by the legend took place more than 10 thousand years ago.
In total, Nunn and his colleagues managed to find about 30 descriptions in Australian legends that correspond to ancient events.
