Scientists from California have taken another step in the search for thermonuclear energy

Scientists from California have taken another step in the search for fusion energy, which, if mastered, could provide the world with a virtually limitless source of clean energy, writes CNN.

On a December morning last year, scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) National Ignition Facility in California succeeded in producing the world’s first nuclear fusion reaction, which released more energy than it used in the ignition process.

They now say they have successfully replicated the fire at least three times this year. This marks another significant step towards what could one day be a major solution to the global climate crisis caused primarily by the burning of fossil fuels, the newspaper writes.

For decades, scientists have tried to harness the energy of nuclear fusion, essentially recreating the power of the Sun on Earth.

After achieving historic net energy gains last year, the next important step was to prove that the process could be repeated.

Brian Appelbe, a research fellow at the Center for Inertial Fusion Research at Imperial College London, said the replication capability demonstrates the “robustness” of the process, showing it can be achieved even when changing conditions such as a laser or fuel pellet.
