Scientists have named varieties of tea that help in the fight against coronavirus

A new study from the University of Georgia shows that something as simple as a cup of tea can help fight COVID-19.

How writes Sci Tech Daily, the team’s findings, published in the journal Food and Environmental Virology, demonstrate how certain teas inactivate SARS-CoV-2 in saliva – in some cases by 99.9%. This is important because the virus infects and multiplies in the mouth, passing through the oropharynx before entering the lungs.

The study authors examined 24 different types of tea from a regular store. Of these, they found five that significantly reduced the amount of virus in saliva: raspberry zinger, eucalyptus, peppermint, green and black tea, with black tea showing the greatest reduction in virus concentration. All tests were conducted in the laboratory under simulated conditions.

The team also tested the effectiveness of tea as a rinse to offer an option for those who don’t want to drink tea but want a highly concentrated rinse that will provide the same benefits as a cup of tea.

The researchers prepared the infusion at a potable concentration using one tea bag per cup, steeped for 10 minutes, without any additives such as milk or sugar. All five types of tea reduced the amount of virus by at least 96% within 10 seconds of ingestion. The most effective was black tea, which reduced the amount of virus by 99.9%. For gargling, tea was brewed at four times the concentration of the drinking infusion, and it turned out that all five types of tea reduced the virus by 99.9% within 10 seconds after gargling.
