An international group of scientists led by French climatologist Edouard Bard from Collège de France concluded that about 14 thousand years ago an extremely powerful magnetic storm occurred on Earth.

Traces of carbon-14 in the tree rings of Japanese cedar in the French region of Provence made it possible to learn about the magnetic storm.

In the 21st century, scientists say, a geomagnetic storm of this magnitude would knock out all satellites and power outages across half the globe would persist for months.

The Carrington event, which caused the failure of telegraph systems across Europe and North America in 1859, was so weaker than the new magnetic storm that it may not affect tree rings, said one of the study’s co-authors, Tim Heaton from the University of Leeds.
