Scientists from Finland compared 13 of the smartest dog breeds to find out who is the smartest of all. The study was published in the journal Scientific Reports.
For evaluation, scientists used a special test in which dogs need to demonstrate reading skills, reactions to human gestures, logical thinking and the ability to solve spatial problems.
13 breeds represented 40 dogs from each breed aged from 1 to 8 years. With regard to short-term memory or logical thinking, no difference was observed between the breeds.
But the dogs differed significantly in problem solving.
The most savvy in this case were: the Belgian Shepherd Malinois, Border Collies and Hovawarts.
Also, experts pointed to sharp intellectual differences between the breeds. For example, the golden retriever and the labrador showed significant differences in some tasks, although they are genetically very close.
